The other day I went to The Habitat Store downtown with my mom. She is a true hardware enthusiast. I am not. But I found these cute retro knobs for 25 cents a piece! They're candy pink with silver trim - they'll be perfect for my bathroom in the new house. I want my bathroom to be really pink and frothy and girly, like in the movies. Cute y/n?

Also, I'm superstoked that Vintage L.A. is finally out! It's the latest work from one of my favorite writers, Jennifer Brandt Taylor. She's also the author of the very influential and inspiring Life is a Movie Starring You. The book's release party is tonight at Fred Segal in L.A., and my amazing friend Crystal, who lives only a bus ride away from Melrose Ave., is getting a copy signed for me! I didn't even ask her to, she just offered because I sounded so excited when I was telling her about it on the phone. She's a sweetheart.
I'm gonna go take our dog for a walk, then I'm off to see Kung Fu Panda with mom dukes.

The Weetzie Bat series has been on my Amazon wish list forever. I'm too old for it, but I don't care. I was with my cousin at Barnes & Noble today when I bought it, and when he saw the cover, he was like, "Um ... lol". Can you blame him?
Cheesy cover aside, I love it. I don't really wish I was thirteen again, but I wish I had read these books when I was. The way Francesca Lia Block describes Los Angeles (or "Shangri-L.A.") is pure magic, and it makes me miss the city SO BAD OMG.
"The reason Weetzie Bat hated high school was because no one understood. They didn't even realize where they were living. They didn't care that Marilyn's prints were practically in their backyard at Graumann's; that you could buy tomahawks and plastic palm tree wallets at Farmer's Market, and the wildest, cheapest, cheese and bean and hot dog and pastrami burritos at Oki Dogs; that the waitresses wore skates at the Jetson-style Tiny Naylor's; that there was a fountain that turned tropical soda-pop colors, and a canyon where Jim Morrison and Houdini used to live, and all-night potato knishes at Canter's, and not too far away was Venice, with columns, and canals, even, like the real Venice but maybe cooler because of the surfers".
That's just the first paragraph. How and why were these never made into a movie?! The first book was written in 1989, so maybe it was a little ahead of its time for young adult fiction. Weetzie even has a gay boyfriend! ~Dirk~ lol.
btw, layla, i know you go to school in L.A. If you haven't read these already, I highly recommend them.

what magazines do you read?
yesterday i had a serious magazine craving. i stood at the newsstand literally for ten minutes because NOTHING looked interesting. it was all either pretentious heavy-stock art magazines or brainless stuff with ali larter on the cover. i ended up with W. wtf?
i miss the days of elle girl and jane (it had its moments). bust and venus zine are good, but they come out only a few times a year.
there are no more funny, well-written women's magazines that cover fashion and music and other pop culture stuff that well. i need to start my own. D:

UM IDKY WHY LJ CUT IS NOT WERKIN
1. What's your favourite snack? Anything salty and crunchy - i find it ~soothing~. S'mores also work.
2. Do you like to grocery shop? Occasionally, when I'm feeling extra suburban. It's fun to go late at night and look for something that will really hit the spot.
3. Baths or Showers? I like to daydream of taking luxurious bubble baths in a tub with feet and everything, but showers = instant gratification. Besides, bathwater becomes tepid and filmy. gross!
4. What colour of pens do you use? black
5. Who is your dream man/woman? Here's a fabulous montage:

I know a lot of people consider birthday and graduation celebrations superficial. But if it weren't for the corny circumstance of those events, I don't think anyone in my family would ever smile at each other. Even if sitting around a table and cutting a cake seems forced, at least we're all in the same room. It's also a good excuse to take pictures, which we never do anymore.
It was my brother's birthday three days ago, and he hasn't even acknowledged the cake my mom picked out. Instead he's been going out every night since, staying out until 4 AM doing god knows what. Way to be a dick. If we don't even bother cutting a cake anymore, we really will fall apart. Besides, the cake looks really good, and I want some. : /

from urbandictionary:
Fag Hag Also known as Fruit Fly and Queer Dear. This is a woman who prefers the company of gay men because she recognizes their effervesence, incisive wit, and sheer brilliance regarding the human condition. This woman appreciates the fact that gay men know how to drill down to the bittersweet core of an issue and make light of it where necessary, and simultaneously make dark humor of it where otherwise necessary. It is a gift that comes from being an outsider: rather than lying down and taking a beating, as some do, the exaulted gay man rises from the ashes and finds the ridiculous glory in being an outsider. In this endeavor, he seeks the company of a woman, and she of him...because regardless of intentions, women and men enjoy the company of those who feel "right" to each other.
Because this type of woman is generally spoiled by the general delightfulness of gay men, she may scorn straight men for their lack of personality and overall dullness.
